D’s Story

D had been a regular at the GLA Day Center and accessing Lake City Partners services since 2016 when LCP opened and operated its first emergency winter shelter. He maintained the same routine every day. He typically arrived at the same time at GLA, used the hygiene services, then enjoyed a meal, and then chatted with staff. He was a valued member of the Lake City community, well known for picking up litter and helping his fellow unhoused neighbors whenever he could. When many people thought of Lake City, they thought of D.

When LCP staff learned that DESC was developing a new permanent supportive housing building in Lake City, D was one of the first people who came to mind. When our team asked D if he would be interested in housing in Lake City, he looked at staff seriously and said, “I’d like that. I think it’s time.”

After connecting with DESC during the building’s local lease-up process, D was selected for housing at the new site! Staff shared the exciting news that he would soon be moving into a brand-new apartment in his own neighborhood.

The DESC staff made the entire process as smooth, welcoming, and trauma-informed as possible, helping D feel at home from the moment he walked through the door. After signing his lease, D spent his first night indoors in years—a significant milestone for someone who had spent so many years outside.

And yet, by being placed so thoughtfully within the area he has spent so many years and built so many friendships, D has been able to keep his community. He is currently painting the fence next to GLA, continues to pick up litter when he sees it, and remains a well-known and welcome face to his friends and neighbors. Welcome home to you, D!
